O2 Telefnica sets new data traffic record during Champions League final

O2 Telefnica, one of the largest mobile network providers in Germany, set a new record in data traffic during the final of the Champions League. For the first time, over one million gigabytes of data were transmitted per hour through the German mobile network.

During the Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, the O2 network was heavily utilized. Over one million gigabytes were transported through the network in just one hour. This new record illustrates that in 2016, the million mark was reached for the first time in a single day. It can be assumed that these values could be exceeded during the upcoming European Championship.

Football matches pose a huge burden on mobile networks, as millions of users now stream games on their mobile devices and share content on social media. Last year, seven out of the ten highest data transfer rates at O2 Telefnica were caused by Champions League games involving German teams. The use of mobile data in Germany is thus reaching new heights.

What were daily values just a few years ago, the network now handles within an hour. This illustrates that digitization is advancing inexorably in all aspects of life. Matthias Sauder, responsible for network expansion at O2 Telefnica, explains that the increasingly powerful networks, large data packets, and the growing use of digital services by consumers in Germany are responsible for this increase.

To cope with the increasing data traffic, mobile network providers like O2 Telefnica are continuously investing in expanding their networks. State-of-the-art technologies are used to increase capacities and ensure reliable data transmission.

However, the increasing use of mobile data also poses a challenge for mobile network providers. They must meet the growing demands while ensuring high quality and network speed. Digitization is advancing, and it is expected that data traffic will continue to rise in the future. Mobile network providers must adapt and expand their networks accordingly to meet the needs of users.
