Some online magazines are using AI-generated images that realistically depict the war in the Gaza Strip without indicating that they are computer-generated representations. These images are sold through Adobe’s in-house image agency, Adobe Stock. The Australian news portal Crikey was the first to report that these depictions are still available for purchase, even though they have already been criticized. However, Adobe emphasizes that AI-generated images must be labeled as such when offered for sale.
According to Adobe, the contested depictions do not violate the company’s guidelines and therefore will not be removed. The company rejects accusations that it contributes to the spread of disinformation on the internet. When searching for media related to the Gaza Strip on Adobe Stock and sorting by relevance, one mainly finds images that are obviously generated by AI but still appear photorealistic. Some of the images even show people who do not actually exist, especially children. One example is an image of dust clouds over Jerusalem, even though there are no conflicts taking place there.
Although the AI-generated images include the label „Generated with AI,“ this label seems to have been partially overlooked or ignored. One such case is the use of one of these images on the website of the US Christian magazine Charisma without proper labeling.
Adobe Stock is part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription. In addition to AI-generated images, the company also offers user-generated content that can be used on the internet under the subscription without additional costs or licenses. Originally, Adobe Stock was part of the Creative Suite and was then transformed into an online service. The content is primarily based on the stocks of the agency Fotolia, which was previously acquired by Adobe.
Adobe emphasizes to Motherboard that AI-generated content must be labeled as such according to the terms of use. This is important to inform customers about the origin of the images and to be part of the fight against disinformation. Currently, there are almost 600 AI-generated photos tagged with Gaza available on Adobe Stock.
