Problems with Ryzen-8000G Processors: BIOS Update to Disable STAPM – Limited Performance and Accidental Activation
Problems with Ryzen-8000G Processors: BIOS Update to Disable Skin Temperature-Aware Power Management (STAPM)
Since last week, we have been testing the Ryzen-8000G processors. However, we have encountered some problems when using the Ryzen 5 8600G with two different motherboards and different BIOS versions. Both in single and multi-threaded operation, the performance of the processor is about 10 to 10% below the expected results. Therefore, we are currently in discussions with AMD and the motherboard manufacturers to first identify the error in our configuration.
Another problem we are dealing with is the Skin Temperature-Aware Power Management (STAPM). In some tests, we found that this feature was enabled, although it is actually intended for use in notebooks. AMD quickly confirmed that this was an accidental mistake. A BIOS update is planned to disable STAPM. ASUS has already provided us with a BIOS version 1905, in which STAPM is allegedly disabled. However, our results have hardly changed – the Ryzen 5 8600G is still too slow and does not meet our expectations.
The motherboard manufacturers will release new BIOS versions in the near future to solve the STAPM issue. The AGESA version 1.1.0.2b we are currently using is still marked as a beta version. It is expected that a final version will be available in the near future.
According to AMD, the STAPM limits were mistakenly applied to the processors of the 8000 series. This reduced their PPT limits under continuous load. We are currently working on a BIOS update to fix this behavior.
The Skin Temperature-Aware Power Management was developed to ensure that the surface or palm rest of a notebook does not overheat excessively. Notebooks have a special sensor that measures the temperature of the case surface. The processor’s power management regulates performance and power consumption to prevent an unpleasant temperature on the resting surface. For a desktop processor, this is obviously not useful, which is why all previous tests could be affected by this problem.
The delay in our testing could ultimately result in us being able to present results that are not affected by this limitation. With the current BIOS version 1905 from ASUS, we no longer receive notifications when approaching the STAPM limit.
