Amazon Web Services (AWS) to Invest $5 Billion in Mexico’s Queretaro, Boosting Cloud Technologies and Nearshoring Trend
Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon, announced at the end of February that it will invest five billion US dollars in an infrastructure cluster in Queretaro, Mexico. The goal of this investment is to offer advanced and secure cloud technologies to provide added value to customers. The central Mexican state of Queretaro, located about three hours northwest of Mexico City, is investing in a similar way to US electric car manufacturer Tesla’s plant in northern Mexico. According to a press release from the company, AWS plans to build its infrastructure region in Mexico by early 2025. The investments will be made over a period of fifteen years.
AWS has announced that the new AWS region in Mexico will offer a wider range of opportunities for developers, startups, companies, and organizations. By providing data centers in Mexico, customers can run their applications, serve end users, and securely store their content in Mexico.
This announcement is in line with the global trend of companies moving their operations closer to their target markets, also known as nearshoring. Mexico is particularly attractive for investment due to its membership in the North American Free Trade Agreement with the US and Canada, especially with regard to the US market.
The investment has been positively received by Raquel Buenrostro, Mexico’s Minister of Economy. The AWS statement emphasizes that the investment is a sign of trust and shows that the appropriate conditions are in place to support the nearshoring trend in various areas of our economy. The minister expressed her appreciation for AWS’s extensive commitment to training students, small and medium-sized enterprises, and digital entrepreneurs in Mexico.
In April 2022, US technology giant Microsoft also announced the construction of a state-of-the-art regional data center in Queretaro. From this location, all Microsoft enterprise services will be provided worldwide.
US chip manufacturer Intel also plans to strengthen its presence in Latin America. The company intends to expand its semiconductor production in North and South America, with Mexico playing a significant role.
In March of last year, Tesla also announced the construction of a mega factory in the north, without specifying a precise schedule or details. There has been talk of an investment of nearly five billion US dollars. However, the company has not yet started construction. There have even been speculations recently that Tesla may not build a plant in Mexico after all.
